Blog Roll

All Too Easy

Dear Max Bergmann,

We graciously received your op-ed submission on what you deem to be a John McCain gaffe on Iraq. We found several problems with it and have decided not to run the piece.

First off, your proposed piece is less than four hundred words long. Even as an internet-based 'blog' type-site, we cannot in good consciene publish something so short and ineffectual. Perhaps you should check out wordpress.com, where you can create your own length? It's like being your own editor!

Furthermore, while your preliminary analysis is factual enough, the rest of the piece simply does not hold intellectual weight. Yes, it is true that John McCain appeared on ABC's This Week and mentioned that we were greeted as liberators in Iraq. It was a fascinating piece and it is always worth of discussion when a presidential candidate reveals certain things about his character.

However, you seem to think that he made a gaffe in his statement about us as liberators. You say (and your grammar errors are [sic], please learn to use commas before submitting anything again), "If McCain really believes that U.S. forces were greeted as liberators, as he and Cheney, predicted, then he clearly has no understanding of what actually happened in Iraq."

Obviously, the situation has since changed, but please watch this video and tell me about us and "liberators.":

Now, please understand, Mr. Bergmann, I'm but a lowly editor here. However, it did take me only fifteen seconds to find video evidence to the contrary of what you are claiming in your short piece. And yes, we are well aware of conspiracy theories about this footage, but please, we are a professional organization and not interested in publicizing conspiracy theories. Perhaps our friends at the Sci-Fi channel will be interested in your op-ed.

Regards,
